IWD 2026 - Balancing The Scales

On 4 March, we gathered with friends and colleagues at Cumulus Inc. for an afternoon of conversation and connection to celebrate International Women’s Day. We anchored our afternoon around the theme of ‘Balancing the Scales’ - a reminder that fairness and opportunity are shared responsibilities - and that real progress benefits everyone.

Beverage Director Leanne Altmann and Development Chef Jacqui Challinor hosted the discussion alongside two incredible voices in food and media - chef and owner at Tedesca Osteria Brigitte Hafner, and Anthea Loucas Bosha, CEO of Melbourne Food & Wine Festival. Collectively, they have seen the hospitality industry shift and change in distinct ways throughout their careers.

Reflecting on their individual paths, Brigitte and Anthea spoke candidly about both the visible and subtle barriers they’ve encountered, whether in kitchens, newsrooms or running a successful business. They described building confidence in high-pressure environments through sharp wit, deep commitment and an unwavering work ethic. Just as importantly, they emphasised the power of community: surrounding yourself with generous peers, backing one another and stepping up as thoughtful colleagues and mentors. As Anthea aptly put it, “The people you work with are the most valuable commodity in your career.”

At pivotal moments, both credited a willingness to take risks, balanced with precision and discipline, as key to their growth. Their message was clear: back yourself, trust your instincts and make space for others to do the same.
