Reisa Evans, Cumulus Inc.

What is your role at Cumulus Inc. and what does this involve?

I am the Restaurant Manager at Cumulus Inc. My job is super hands-on, working closely with Alexandra O’Reilly (our Venue Manager) to oversee the operations of the restaurant. I train, I hire, I develop staff, I manage costs and most importantly, I work on the floor with my team.

What has been your journey in hospitality prior to joining Cumulus Inc.?

Like many people, I started working in hospitality on the side while doing something else. I was studying International Relations at the time but loved bartending at a pub — I just loved being busy! I really fell in love with restaurants, leaving those studies to the side and studying hospitality management. I came to Australia and started at Atlas Dining before joining Cumulus Inc. in October 2022.

What's the best part of your job?

It’s the people across the board — whether that be connecting with guests or building a team and creating a culture. I genuinely love wowing our guests, exceeding expectations and creating an emotional bond with people.

Who has inspired, or mentored you in your career?

One of my first General Managers in Toronto is a huge source of inspiration to me. She was the mother of young boys. She was so real and she communicated so well. She taught me that you can continue in hospitality after having kids —  you don’t have to choose between work and life while still growing professionally. She set my expectations that a good company will adapt and support you.

What advice would you give someone thinking of embarking on a career in hospitality?

Do it, it’s amazing. For young people looking for a career, have patience and slow down. It takes time to get good at your craft. Be honest with your management team about where you would like to go so they can encourage your development.

What’s next for you in your career?

I always want to be connected to hospitality. Whether that be business development, opening new sites or the wine side of things.
